Magdalena Bay creates a new website for every album release, a thematically curated, interactive experience meant to draw listeners into both a new sound and energy. The duo’s second album, Imaginal Disk, touts a website reminiscent of your mother’s vintage computer. It features an unnerving collection of anonymized figures in town center sites and liminal back rooms that prompt reflection from even the most pretentious indie starling media critic fans. The probing website content sets the tone for the album itself, a musically complex, conceptually dense album following True, whose body rejects a compact disk implant that is meant to transform her into her “ideal self.” Imaginal Disk thus grapples with questions of humanity and memory atop a groovy, innovative pop sound. The LA-based pop duo continues to push the boundaries of pop music in an age where optimistic sound is increasingly sanitized and mainstream.
