Preview: Take a (metaphorical) seat with Peter McPoland

By Madeline Jones

Peter McPoland is a singer-songwriter from Burlington, Vermont. At 25 years old, he is already an established artist in the alternative/indie music scene. Originally finding success with singles online such as “Shit Show” and “Romeo & Juliet,” McPoland has since released three EPs and two full-length albums. The most recent album, Big Lucky (2025), was released in September of this past year. It marks a shift from McPoland’s previous music, which featured carefully produced bedroom-pop tracks, towards a more pared-back focus on instrumentation and intimacy.

Recorded on a tape machine in his bedroom, Big Lucky represents a sort of catharsis for McPoland. In a time of ever-increasing digital use and consumption, McPoland takes a purposeful step back in order to reconnect with his craft, his fans, and himself. The title Big Lucky comes from a four-leaf clover that McPoland carries with him, signaling the sincerity, nostalgia, and hope that the album is so poignantly infused with. On tracks such as “Rats” and “What Do You Do To Me?” McPoland traverses feelings of high-strung tension and hazy confusion. He counters those with acoustic, instrumental tracks, such as “Intro” and “The Song,” which offer a more vulnerable and stripped down version of McPoland. All in all, Big Lucky invites you to take a seat and enjoy a welcome reprieve from the noise and chaos of the world.

As he continues on his 30-show North American tour, Peter McPoland will be performing on February 24, 2025 at the iconic 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, at 7:00 PM. American-Irish folk duo DUG will be opening for him as they promote their new album, Have At It! Tickets can be purchased here through Ticketmaster.
