Black Mountain - In the Future

Hmmm… what to say? Overall the album was not a complete miss. Black mountain has the ability to make the listener feel as though they picked up an LP from a retro music store. The band brings you back to the days of psychedelic rock while still maintaining their originality. However, their “originality” is not particularly satisfying. There is a tendency to draw out songs and be repetitive (prime example being track 9: Bright Lights).

The album’s second song, “Angels”, was my favorite. The steady and smooth beat made me feel as if I was in a movie, perhaps Almost Famous. I could imagine myself walking through a smoky room filled with topless women and dazed groupies sitting on purple couches. Maybe this is the attitude you need to have when listening to In the Future. Picture yourself in the life of a movie character…Either that or do some drugs beforehand.

The rest of the songs were almost painful to listen to. The epic song of the album, 16 minute “Bright Light”, made me want to walk towards the light myself; just in order to escape the misery. However I am sure the repetitive chanting is quite mesmerizing if in the right state.

While Black Mountain shows good vocals and accurately recreates psychedelic tunes, they lack creativity and the album is in general rather dull and boring.
